Question
Would the engine make a ticking (lifters) noise if the belt is way overdue? Can the new belt go on the same way the old one came off without turning the gears?

Ron, the answer to both is NO!  The lifter noise is usually caused by not enough lubrication.  There is a kit for the oil sump but that is a lot of work to do without taking it to a Volvo Shop.  The belt has to be lined up properly or else serious engine damage  will occur.  These motors are very pickey.  Roger
