Volvo Repair: 1996 740 sputtering and idle problem, regulator problem, fuel regulator

My 96 740 has recently begun to hesitate while driving, regardless of speed. When I come to a stop the car has a hard idle where it revs up and then almost stalls. This morning it almost stalled when I was parked and the battery light flickered - the lights were also dimming as the car sort of reved up. Seems to me the car is not getting enough fuel? It kind of smelled of fuel when I turned the car off. Can you help?

Jeff, you must mean an 86 740, there is no 96 740.  Sounds like you have a few issues going on.  It may be a fuel regulator problem or an airmass meter going wacky.  This is one of those situations that it will be very difficult to diagnose without seeing the car.  Roger
