Volvo Repair: heater fan, volvo 850, heater fan

I have a 1997 volvo 850 and the fan has stopped working on all speeds except high (4).  The fan has been making a squeaking noise at the lower speeds for some time before it quit working.  The car does not have climate control.  Is this a fan motor problem or is it related to the switch or resistor?

Well the resistor is the cause of the fan not working, the squeeking is the bearing/brushes inside the motor.  Replace the resistor to get the fan working again, replace the blower motor to fix the squeek.  You can try to oil it if you want but very thin oil like WD40 and very sparingly.
