Volvo Repair: No Crank 2001 V70 Turbo, crankshaft position sensor, volvo specialist

Question

What will cause a no crank condition on my 2001 V70 Turbo wagon?  Lights on dash come on, head lights, etc, turn key and nothing.  Later, starts as normal.  Replaced battery yesterday; not sure if that was the problem but a logical place to start since it was the original 5 year old battery.  Could it be a crankshaft position sensor? Does this model have an immobilizer that I've read about? Could it be a gear shift position problem?  Many thanks!  Scott

Answer
It is most likely the immobilizer that is causing your issues.  Although it could be something else, that's what i would think is your problem.  The neutral switch, if it fails will cause the display on the dash to no read correctly for which gear you are in.  And the crank position sensor I have never had to replace.  Regardless of what it is, it should leave some sort of diagnostic code.  If it somehow doesn't then you really have something to worry about.  It would be next to immpossible to find if it is intermittent with no codes stored.  Just trying to duplicate the problem could take days.  Take it to a dealer or volvo specialist that has the ability to read the entire cars electrical system including the immobilizer (alot of independent shops dont have the ability to read auxillary systems like the climate or immobilizer).  That is going to be the only way for sure to know what you're dealing with.
