Volvo Repair: v70 front suspension noise, volvo experience, center bolt

Question
I am a BMW master tech but have no real Volvo experience past my old 240dl. My mother in law's 02' v70 FWD turbo wagon has a noise in the front end when hitting light to moderate bumps. I have made sure the front struts aren't leaking and the sway bar links don't have any noticable play but beyond that I am at a loss. It seems there is a strut brace that also has the upper engine mount and it is mounted in rubber bushnings enclosed with a metal housing on each shock tower. the driver side has noticable play (more so than passenger) but I amnot sure if that could be the source since it seems that I am looking for a suspension noise. Also the noise is prodimanently from the passenger side. Have you any suggestions? Thank you.

Answer
Check the upper strut mount/spring seats.  They will crack through and then there will be PLENTY of noise.  you can check it by popping off the top bolt of the strut (21mm)and pulling off the cap.  NOTE: ONLY PERFORM THIS WITH VEHICLE ON GROUND, IF VEHICLE IS LIFTED DO NOT REMOVE CENTER BOLT.  SPRING WILL UNLOAD.  You can then inspect the mount for cracks.  Also check the ball joint nuts because some cars (not sure of yours) have had issues with them being recalled and replaced.
