Volvo Repair: FRONT OFFSIDE WHEEL KNOCKING, volvo s80, model volvo

Question
I have a 99 model Volvo S80 2.9 which has a knocking/chattering sound from the front offside (drivers) wheel.  This is much more noticeable when turning sharp left hand manouevres and when on uneven road surfaces.  Not as noticeable at all when on smooth roads or motorway driving.  I have had the discs changed, brake pads, and drop link arm but to no avail.  The dealer says the track rod end has no play and the bushes appear fine, so they are at a loss, but do agree something is wrong.  Please help!!

Answer
Well here are all of the items that can cause a knocking noise from a wheel area.  It will be up to you and your service technician to figure out which is your problem:

1. The upper strut seat is cracked
2. The upper strut bearing has play in it
3. The sway/antiroll bar link has gone bad (one of its ball joints
4. The control arm bushings have cracked or have play
5. The brakes have play in them somewhere (aftermarket)
6. The ball joint has play in it
7. The ball joint nut is loose: there has been a revision to the design of the nut.  Make sure you have the latest design.  There was a recall for it.
