Volvo Repair: 2006 S80 - Steering Problem, wheel wells, steering wheel

Question
When turning the steering wheel all the way (either direction), it feels as if something is grabbing the wheels - - preventing them from moving.  This is especially noticeable when pulling into or backing into a parking space at lower speeds.
When you start to return the steering wheel more toward the center position, the "grabbing sensation" stops, and the car can lurch forward quickly.

Answer
The steering stops on those cars wear very quickly.  The wheels are actually hitting the inside of the wheel wells.  I think if you look in there behind the wheel in front of the strut you will see scraping marks where the wheels have been hitting.  The solution is to rotate the steering stops (they are 2 sided, they can switch sides and reused) or the more permanent solution is to space them out with some washer behind them.  Next time you are in for regular service at the dealer just tell them what you told me and they can take care of it for you under warranty.
