Volvo Repair: Volvo aftermarket brakes unsafe?, metallic brake pads, volvo aftermarket

Question
I have a 1998 Volvo S70.  I was told by my mechanic that I needed new brakes at a cost of about $400. My husband replaced the brakes with aftermarket parts for less than half this amount.  I have since brought the car into the same mechanic for other service and when I picked the car up the mechanic told me that the aftermarket brake pads we installed do not wear down ever and that eventually these parts would cause the calipers to rust out and the brakes would lock up. He suggested that I replace these with authentic Volvo parts ASAP.  Is this true?  Everyone I speak to has never heard of brakes that don't wear.  Can you tell me if it is necessary to buy genuine brake parts for Volvos or if what they said makes any sense.  I am a long time customer of this shop and hate to think they are lying to me...  I appreciate your help!

Answer
Joyce, Relax.  If you tell me what kind of pads that your husband put in and rotors, then I will be happy to tell you.  What he is referring to is probably metallic brake pads.  Personally, I dont like them, they make too much noise.  We use Brembo Brake rotors and Rouunds brake pads.  Other pads that we use are Mintex and Textar.  These are all good quality parts.  Is this shop a Volvo shop?  Roger
