Volvo Repair: XC70 2001 BLOWING BLUISH / GREY SMOKE, grade oil, changing oil

Question
Sir,
my car underwent a 75,000 service in april. fluids: oil filters, new software etc all ok. The car gets little use. It's started blowing a strange smelling smoke today. I checked the fluids and the oil was really low. I'm good about taking notice of messages and gauges and there was no indication the car was low on oil or running warm(if it is). All seems well except the smoke.
Any ideas?
thanks in advance

Answer
The bluish smoke is burning oil, and it is the first indicator of turbocharger failure.  That is why the oil was low.  The turbos usually fail because of low oil quality because of poor grade oil or oil changes have been too infrequent.  At this point it is too late to do anything to save it.  It's only gonna get worse.  The solution is to have your turbo charger replaced.  The parts are in the area of 800-900 dollars and it will take 5-7 hours of labor depending on where you go.  After it has been replaced though you should reevaluate how often you do your oil changes.  I would do at least 1 in between normal services which occur every 7500 miles.  Then your changing oil every 3750.  Much safer and will extened the life of your motor greatly.  If you are even 1000 miles late if you only do 7500 miles between services, then you have been slowly causing damage to your motor.
