Volvo Repair: wheels and trans fluid, volvo s 40, surface rust

Question
i have a question for u...i brought my 2002 volvo s 40 to a dealership in south florida close to miami, and on the way home, i felt a hard vibration. i took it back to the dealership and the service advisor told me that my wheel was about to fall off. they just did a what they call a 7500 service over the weekend. i couldn't believe what i heard. the master tech told me that lug nuts must be torque to volvo specs to prevent this problem from happening again. is this true? if so can u tell met what that means? i'm not even sure that a master tech worked on my car that day. i'm very upset and i need your help. please james help me figure this out. and also they tried to sell me a trans flush, but they told me that my trans takes a special fluid. they told me that i need synthetic fluid. does my car really need this, or are they just trying to make money? please e mail me back soon because i'm going on a trip to texas soon. thanks james tembrook!

Answer
The information you have received is 100% correct!  The wheels on first generation s40's had issues.  The hubs would start to get surface rust on them which would prevent good hub to wheel mounting, so unless the wheels were retorqued properly they may not have gotten all the way flush.  The bolts would look and feel tight but the wheel wasn't all the way down.  If you drive on the car like this the wheel will eventually come loose by itself unless it is taken care of.  They would have done this during the 7500 mile service you received.

With the transmission, all 5 speed automatic transmissions require synthetic fluid (8-12 dollars a quart, about 12 quarts).  It is an important and often very overlooked service.  You should do this service every 50-60k miles to maximize the transmission life.  If you use the wrong fluid internal transmissions issues are possibly/likely.
