Volvo Repair: turn signal arm and odometer, top screws, coolant system

Question
Hi Roger,
I have a '87 240GL volvo sedan. As I was driving today my turn signal arm decided to fall apart. I have done some minor work on my car before(replaced spark plugs, lights, some tubes and cables, front frame that holds the hood down-which involved removing all front lights, fan and coolant system inorder replace it, also changed the distributer-with the help of my friend with a timing gun)For the most part I enjoy learning and working on my car and I wanted to know how complicated the replacement of this part is since it is attached to the stearing wheel.

My other question is about my odometer that was not workig when I bought the car a while back. It really has never been a priority but since the car is fairly old I'd like to have a better gage for maintanense purposes. How do you remove the face to get into the gears and am I looking at buying a whole new face or just replacing the gears? oh the litlle reset button has never been attached it just dangles.
thank you
krystina

Answer
Krystina, the turn signal stalk will take you 10 minutes.  Its held in with 2 screws and 4 wires.  Once you have it off, then you just transfer the wires over.  Remove the 2 top screws on the wheel column and take that cover off.  There should also be a screw by the ignition lock and another on the left side.  It may have a little cover for you to pop off.  Then take 2 screws from bottom and the lower cover will come out.  As far as the odometer gear, its easiest to take the whole instrument cluster out.  Not sure if you want to get into that.  We can discuss it more, if you'd like.
