Volvo Repair: 2002 XC70 Cross Country Wagon, steering wheel lock, jeep cherokee

Question
James:
I just purchased a 2002 XC70 and have only  driven it for about 300 miles. Today I went to turn the key in the ignition and it would not turn at all.  I tried the spare key, tried locking the car and unlocking etc, all to no avail.  I had this problem in my Jeep Cherokee, and the ignition lock cylinder needed to be replaced.  Is this the same issue?  Any ideas or recommendations about known problems with these ignitions?
thanks much-Damon
(also, is this something that an auto lock specialist can handle, or should I only have a dealer work on it?)

Answer
it is the lock cylinder.  It isn't common, but its not uncommon.  It is actually several pieces in there and the part that sticks is usually the steering wheel lock.  Any lock specialist i guess can replace the column lock/ignition lock assembly.  Just be sure to order the precoded lock clinder from the dealer.  Should be between 100-200 dollars.  It will take 7 days to arrive and you will need your VIN# to order it.
