Volvo Repair: Oil leak, flame trap, oil leak

I, recently, took a 1997 850 GLT to a mechanic because of an oil leak that appeared to be coming from the rear main seal.

He said that the "flame trap" was clogged and that by cleaning the trap that would cure the oil leak.

I would like to know whether the flame trap cleaning would cure the oil leak or whether it would still remain.

Ron, no way.  Once the seal is leaking, its leaking.  It may also be coming from the rear cam seals.  The only tru way of knowing if the rear main is to clean up the area and run the car, if its coming out of that small hole then thats what it is.  Be prepared to spend about 900 bucks.  Very labor intensive.  Roger
