Volvo Repair: 85 240 DL gone whacky, alternator warning light, phillips screw

Question
When I used my directional lever a few days ago there was a very loud EEERRRRRG noise, all the warning lights went on and then no longer worked.  My actual directional lights work (when I put on the hazard button) but the lever doesn't anymore.  But some electrical parts on the same fuse do still work.  Also, the converter light glows (sometimes gets brighter sometime fades) since.  Every once in a while the directional lever works again but only to make the loud noise again and then the whole situation repeats itself.  Looks like I have a bit of corrosion on the battery so will scrub that off but am worried about that alternator warning light actually meaning something rather than just the bulbs or a fuse going batty...

Answer
Hi Rebecca,
Sorry to take so long answering...but I think I know the problem your car has.
Replace the flasher unit...a inexpensive part that is located inside the center console...lower left side..in front near drivers right leg...if you are carefull you can find it by listening to its flashing noise when you use the Em. flasher...also used for dirrectional lights.
There's a panel that must be removed ..its easy...turn funny looking slotted things that appear on front edge...turn them 1/2 turn and carefull remove them...remove panel...there,next to a metal support is the rectangular small plastic flasher unit...easy job...go to parts store...get new one..maybe 15$ and replace the old unit...simple?...maybe 1 small phillips screw has to be loosened also.
                 Good luck,
