Volvo Repair: check engine light on, stalling when go from idle to in gear, volvo 240 wagon, volvo service

Question
I have a 1992 Volvo 240 wagon w/ 190K miles.  Recently on a long drive I
noticed the engine became sluggish, slow to accelerate, seemed to have trouble
moving up in gear.  When stopped and idling, the engine started surging.  Oil
clean and full, but VERY low on coolant.  Added coolant.  Added premium gas
(someone suggested perhaps a bad tank of gas?). Engine light comes on a few
miles later even tho seems to being running a little better.  Made it home ok.
Now engine does not surge while idling but peters out and dies, particularly
when release foot from gas pedal and put in gear.  Oil indicator flickers while
idling (even tho full of oil), and only when idling (THAT is weird).  New O2 sensor
last year to pass emissions.  I love this car!  Please advise.

Answer
Hi Anne,
In todays Volvos some of the systems that manage items like fuel are complex...even changing the fuel filter is a big pain..
It would be a little misleading if I told you what your problem is without actually seeing your car.
You must find a Volvo service dept.or another competant mechanic who understands Volvo...your best dollar value... when you bring your car into the local shell station and they take a guess as to what your problem is..makes no sense to pay for service and parts that don't fix your problem..Get expert advice...
             Good luck,
