Volvo Repair: 1990 740 GL heater core, heater control valve, heater core

Question
I heard a loud pop on night an my car started overheating
rapidly.  I made it home, and the following day i added water to
my radiator, which immediately drained out of a hose that was
unattached (and broken off at the metal part that attached to
what i think is the heating core.  Since summer is coming, can i
bypass the heater core and attach the hose somewhere else until
i can afford to replace the heater core?  (Assuming that it is the
heater core where the hose attachment broke off..)
Thanks for your attention!

Answer
Lisa, thats the heater control valve.  its a common failure.  You can get one from the dealer or autoparts place.  Im assuming it didnt break at the firewall correct?  If it did break at the firewall, then there is the bypass.  Let me know what broke.  Roger
