Volvo Repair: 84 240 rear end trouble, and misc questions, power steering hose, wheel bearings

Question
I do have mechanical skills 205,000miles
I bought a 240 sw for $300, it had been sitting for a few years.  I put some gas in it and it started right up and idled great, it runs great too.  I put new plugs wires and coil.  I took it to a shop and they are trying to sell me 4500 dollars of work,  new rear end, there was this constant whirring sound  while driving , they said it was the wheel bearings, and carrier bearings and all that, they want a grand for that, then the wipers dont work, the heat don't blow. oh yeah, leaking pcv thing and high pressure steering hoses, the hoses I can replace myself. I could pobably do the blower too, but I guess my question is do you think its worth it to put 2000 in to this car that has 200 grand on it and the body and everything inside is totally straight, my dad tells me not to put money into it because volvos always need to be worked on.  what goes wrong with these engines, and do the trannies go?  any advise you have would be awsome, I really appreciate you taking the time to read this over.
