Volvo Repair: 1994 850 volvo transmission dreaded flashing arrow, volvo transmission, tranny oil

Question
I can't believe after reading many of your replys that you are just across from the Cape on MV!
I have minimal mechanical auto skills.
I love my 1994 850 wagon with 212K miles, but it does not seem to go into lower gears (particularly in cold weather)now. Two  mechanics have told me that a selenoid in the tranny is bad and because it is sealed, it could not be fixed and would have to be replaced.
I have had the PNP switch changed in the past, but it did not last.
Is it really a sealed transmission? Is it worth saving the car with that high milage. It has many other replaced parts within the last two years.

Answer
Hi Paul...
Be sure you get more than a few opinions and estimates...look on internet for Technical Service Bulletin
that relates to your specfic problem....get model # of tranny....be certain of this...seek TSB's that speak to your problem...if any exist...I'll betcha a lunch burrito
at Chili's on Hyannis rotary that others have felt your pain/problem and may offer solutions...worth a try...in closing....if you changed tranny fluid every 25-30k most trannys would last forever....bad tranny oil kills most
auto trans....on rare occassions simple repairs can be the answer.
                         Good luck,
