Volvo Repair: Strong smell of fuel, gas vapors, charcoal canister

Question
Dear sir,
Let me thank you in advance. I have a 92 740 with 240K. My car gives me few problems and never serious ones. But recently I have noticed the odor of Fuel whenever I get out of my car after driving it to or from work. This is odd, to me, 6 months ago my mechanic told me it was running lean when he gave it a tune-up, we agreed that this wasn't really a problem and we left her alone in that respect. Since then I have moved form S. Florida to Central Ohio. Is it possible the Cold weather is making it run rich? Should i just leave her alone?
I was a mechanic on a ship once and i do my own smal maintenance, I'm still fairly mechanically inclined, though I have to admit i Don't know much about my cars fuel system

Answer
Hi Karl..
Gas leaks are easy to find...sort of...
There is a charcoal canister designed to store gas vapors..emissions...it's the front lower area of either of your front fender...it's moved around... depending on certern equipment...you'll probably find a hose that broke or fell off of a connector...just look around that area, closely.
I have to ask...is the gas cap the right one..?
Also consider hoses that go to the fuel tank...the bigger hoses are emissions hoses...also fuel delivery line.
Keep a good flow of air supplyed by a med...larg fan..
You can get pretty messed up working in the fumes....today's gas is bad stuff...never wash your hands in it to clean...
Anyway, those are the 2 main areas to look into..
 Good luck,
