Volvo Repair: buying used volvo, fuel emissions, push car

Question
I am looking at purchasing a 1991 Volvo Turbo 740. with 189k.
It has had the timing chain replaced, and was in an accident with minor front end damage. That is about all I know about it.
I have heard that problems with volvos are very minor, but still leary about buying 1991, cost of repairs etc. My husband does currently do most of the repairs on my Buick, but those parts are easy to find.
Any suggestions about common problems to look for after certain mileage?

Answer
Hello Debbie,
Buying a hi mile Volvo can be a great deal.....or NOT.
DO NOT BUY THIS CAR IF IT HAS A V-6 engine.
This engine is a mechanics nightmare and they are less reliable than the 4 cyl.
          ONLY BUY A 4 CYLINDER 740....
If you want the car look at the following:
Windshield, often they are pitted and when oncomming headlamps reach the w/s the light beam will include many burstings of light reflected in all the pitting or scratches.
Check for leaks....under car....check exhaust parts..cat etc.put clean paper towel into tailpipe and wipe the inside and assess it...oily means oil problem...other dirty residue is burnt gasoline...lite dusting of exhaust material on paper towel is good sign...heavy deposits mean fuel/emissions problem..check out sunroof for leaks and operation..look at fusebox condition...examine headlamp clear plastic cover...check  trunk for water leak....check out headliner...tires
On level road, with car in neutral, push car by hand....if it rolls easy ..good...if it is resistant.. possible expensive brake work, frozen calipers..make sure
e-brake works well..put car in gear and try to go..
         Good luck,
