Volvo Repair: 87 740 turbo wagon manual overdrive, turbo wagon, d light

Question
I just bought a 1987 740 turbo wagon with a manual transmission, and the overdrive doesn't work. I've read the posts about changing the relay, but I wanted to know if there was a way I could test it first. My overdrive light doesn't go on. In fact I have never even seen it, not even when I turn the key all the way. Could the switch or the wiring be causing this?
Also, the only relay I've been able to track down costs $98, so I want to be sure this is the problem before I purchase it.

Answer
Hi Todd,
Take out the electrics panel behind the ashtray..it is held in place with large clips..use small screwdriver to pry with...with the assembly out check all fuses...replace those that are corroded...often the O.D.and A/C fuses fail.Clean all related contacts well.
With key in "ON" position...put car in 4th...tap on overdrive relay with screwdriver...light might flicker...meaning relay has failed...
there is the possibility that the O D  light has failed...sometimes wiring related to O D fails near gearshift..broken wire..
Many relays are fond in that panel.....of course pinpoint the right relay...
I have assumed that you are capable of doing this type of electrical work that depends upon the use of a test light.
