Volvo Repair: 1990 740 Front Wheel Bearings, front wheel bearings, brake components

Question
Hi, Mr. B:

I'm about to change front brake components (well over 100K on this set, with auto trans!), and I was considering repacking the front wheel bearing while I had it apart. My favorite supplier shows a hub/bearing assembly, but the regular parts store seems to have separate bearings, etc. Does this car have some sort of assembly that can be serviced, or is a sealed unit?

Many thanks!

Answer
Hi Steve,
You CAN do this job...but you MUST be super clean when repacking your front wheel bearings...or they will fail...sooner.
Remove necessary parts to gain access to hub assy....remove ALL old grease...wash out bearings...gasoline cleans well but keep your hands out of it...wipe them clean...repack bearings by using a "bearing buddie"...it forces grease into the inner reaches of the bearing...cheap but needed tool...
Getting the hub assy is a easy way...costly.
Look closely at bearings...if they are clean...without any gray color on any part of the rollers
you can use your bearings.
