Volvo Repair: 1988 volvo 740 stuck in overdrive, volvo 740, light flickers

I just bought a volvo 740. The person who sold it told me that it is stuck either in overdrive  or not overdrive. It sometimes swiches. I have had it a week, and it is stuck in overdrive. Also, 4th gear dosnt seem to operate. DO you have any advice?

Hi Andy,
        Check the O D relay located behind the ashtray in with all the other electronic components...there is a good chance that your problem is there....tap it with a screwdriver...see if the light flickers...
            No 4th gear.....weird...linkage or mounting hardware has a problem.
