Volvo Repair: replacing the alternator, wiring connections, blind faith

Question
it seems that the alternator has gone on my 240 DL wagon.  while driving, everything was fine until slowing down, and then the car would die.  it could be jumped, but would shortly die again.  as a female, new to an area, i don't have a mechanic and am going on blind faith.  was wondering how much it should be around to change the alternator, just so i know if i am getting ripped off or not.  thank you.

Answer
         Amy,
Certain assumptions are made..with your description....that the battery is a Good battery, and has been tested...you used volt meter to test alt. output...14-14.5 volts are what a good alt. puts out..anything less means there is a problem.
Removing alternator is pretty easy...disconnect battery and get out your trusty 13mm wrench and a 3/8 drive with a 13mm socket and remove bottom bolt...(a long bolt)pull it all the way out...remove adjuster bolt/nut
Neatly remove the wiring connections at alt.
If you're lucky you may replace the brush/reg.assembly because your brushes are worn out...this componant lives in the back of alt....held in with 2 screws.
This assy. is removed in a carefull handling approach...if you have above average ability you can do this job and save mucho dollars.
Do not over tighten belts...there is no need to..after all there are 2 belts.
Test system with volt meter...available at Radio shack...$20.
You do this job right...and you can hold your head up high and feel proud of...fixing your own car.

               Good luck,
         Bilbo
