Volvo Repair: 1981 Volvo DL idle problem, vacuum leak, carburetor engine

Question
Hello,

I have a 1981 Volvo DL wagon with the carburetor engine.  It starts easily, but once I take my foot off of the gas the engine rpms drop down to just above the lowest line on the tach (right above the zero).  It will idle for a few seconds there (very rough) and then stall out.  It does it when it's hot or cold, and regardless of how I adjust the choke.  Once on the move it runs just fine.

I have just purchased this car and have little history, but I know it sat unused for approximately 14 months before I acquired it.

Answer
Hello Doug,
The symtoms you talk about could be related to any of the following reasons....Carb throttle rest is out of adjustment...Carb has problems...bad diaphram...leaky shaft bushings..vacuum leak...
If the gas is 14 months old...you might have to drain it...if it smells bad...or..you might want to add carb.cleaner to the tank...with a full tank of premium.
Be sure to change the fuel filter..
