Volvo Repair: 1989 240 dl starting electric problems, volvo 240 dl, deep mud

Question
I drove my '89 Volvo 240 dl through some deep mud and then several days later had a non starting car.  Some wires were hanging from my alternator and I took it to repair shop and basically they said there was a short.  They said it would now start but alternator would soon die due to no power.  Can you explain possibility of what happened and what to do.  I am 2,000 miles from my car and I would like info on how to repair to get it back home.  Thanx

Answer
without seeing it I can not say for sure.sounds like the wires to the alternator have shorted out and will need to be repaired.usually the alternator red wire and oilpressure switch black wire shorts out together. you will need to cut open the harness running at the bottom of the timing belt cover and splice in new pieces of wire.
