Volvo Repair: 1999 S80 2.9 Gasoline Smell, gasoline smell, vent hose

Question
My 1999 S80 has appx 80k on it right now. Recently I have noticed a heavy smell of gasoline while the car is running or not running. If u are standing outside while the car is running u smell it. You also smell it inside. When the car is parked for a while and u open the doors or trunk the smell hits u immediately. I can find no leaks and there have been no spills to account for the interior smell. There is a service message that now comes on saying "emission system requires service". Is it possible something with the emisions system could cause the smell of fumes. In conjunction with starting to experience this smell, it also is having a harder time starting.I have to crank it for several seconds now before it starts. Before starting was almost instant. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. I want to have a direction for the dealer service dept to start looking. The volvo Maintenance is extremely costly and they always seem to find something beyond what the problem to add additional charges for. Also where can I get good info on the volvo fuel system i.e diagrams part numbers etc...

Answer
there are 2 possibilities.the fuel tanks leak often at where the vent hose for the canister attaches to thetank.this could be why the light is on.the hard start is probably the fuel pum sending unit is cracked where the fuel line attaches to it.I have seen this often.sounds like it may need a fuel tank and a fuel tank pump sending unit.

for info on the car you could try a aftermarket repair manual or a volvo one you can order from www.volvotechinfo.com
