Volvo Repair: Volvo 94 850, winter mode, muddy conditions

Question
The low gear or 'W' gear up arrow is flashing but car still runs?

Answer
Hello Todd,  Yes.. and it will, that 'up arrow' flashig is telling us that the trans has stored a 'fault code'.The most common problem was the PNP switch. We used to call it the 'neutral safty' switch. They started to show up at about 65-73k .Having it 'adjusted' never cured it, located on top of the trans. was a good idea but under the battery tray was not.Becaues the lever only went to P to D  and R those contacts in the switch(little spring and detent ball wore a flat spot and affected the separation of the contacts and throws a code. The 'W' is winter mode, the car accelerate in 2nd gear to avoid spinning out in snow ,rain or muddy conditions.Thank you and good hunting!  PKD
