I have a recently acquired 82 Volvo that I left with my son in North Carolina.  The headlight switch is intermittent.  The high beams have been disconnected somehow by a previous user.  Is this a typical problem and is the solution to have the switch replaced?

Dad, have you ever noticed while driving the volvo at night that the headlights cut off for no reason?  I'm not talking about the brights.  Dashboard and headlights just cut off unexpectadly.  Fiddling withe the headlight switch works, but is is dangerous when driving at night and the lights just cut off.  Happened a few nights ago on 485.  Took a while to find hazards and then fugure out what was going on.

Almost happened tonight, but I caught it in time and stopped at a gas station and re-adjusted switch.

Answer
Hello Closius,  The problem lies in the head lamp switch. Also I am presuming she is a 240 model and the head lamp relay needs to be replaced ! Important! It is located behind the center console top area, the Green/red wire is your guide. Its up behind the metal back stop of the console, just left of center. It will help to operat the head lamp switch, that makes the relay 'click' making it easier to pinpoint. IT IS NOT WHERE ANY OF THE BOOKS SAY IT IS!! Trust me.Thank you and good hunting!  PKD
