Volvo Repair: 740 Volvo brakes and window regulator, glass slides, hard job

Question
I drive a 1988 740 Turbo sedan

Firstly - In November Mr Volvo changed my brakes. A couple weeks later they started to squeal. They machined them kind of into a point at the end as they said when they're squared off they collect dirt. Began to squeal again. They gave me new brake pads on Friday. Squeal even worse now. What do I do?

Secondly - My rear drivers side window fell down and wont go back up or down now. Mr Volvo told me it's the regulator and for a used part they would charge about $300. Is this price normal? (canadian). Also, is this not something I could do on my own and buy the part or should I have a mechanic do it? The same thing happened to both my front windows and they kind of fixed them however, the passenger side will not close tight and the driver's side takes about five minutes to open (only a slight exageration) but you get the point... it sloooow.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Miranda

Answer
Greetings,
Squealing fr. brakes is caused by...caliper problem(caliper gets stuck in one position, more or less)and keeps pressure on pads...thereby causing your pads to glaze.
Glazed pads and discs make noise.Mostly squealing.
Not a serious problem...for the most part.
Your front wheels should move freely when you rotate the wheels while wheels are off ground.
Have your Mr.Volvo repairman add E M P compound to the back of your pads...it prevents squeal.

OUCH...the price for the used window regulator is expensive...I think...my guess is 75 - 125
Be sure to ask if you are buying another window motor as well..you probably don't need one of them..
Often, the problem can be traced to a bolt or another piece of hardware that became disconnected...due to door being slammed.
Putting in a regulator can be a bit of a challange...but it's not a real hard job for a mechanical friend.

Spray silicone into tracs that glass slides up and down in.
Use lots of it...your windows will move much faster.
Good luck,
Bilbo
