Volvo Repair: Adjusting idle speed, cold engine, connecting link

Question
Hi there, I have a 1984 240 GL, mileage 189K, and I was trying to get the car smogged today and it idled too high. I was told I could adjust it myself but I know very little about cars. Can you tell me where the idle speed adjuster is, in relation to bigger parts so I could tell how to do it?
Thanks

Answer
Hello Sam,  The 'throttle body' is where to start. Its the silver part on thre drivers side of the engine, with large black hose.It comes from the air mass meter. With a cold engine. The adjustment is under where you see the 'connecting link'.You can see a small screw. Its held tight by a 8 mm (or5/16) nut.Loosen the nut, with a small, short screwdriver, turn the screw out till doesn't touch the 'stop'.Then turn it 'in'till it just touches the stop, then turn it an additional 1/2 turn.reconnect the link. Also make sure the throttle 'bobbin',thats that spring loaded wheel, rest on its 'stop' when you disconnect the link rod.Thank You and good hunting!  PKD
