I have a 1990 automatic 760Turbo Wagon. Generally it runs fine
except that every month or so for some reason that my
mechanic cannot explain or fix, the engine will just shut off. It
usually happens during idle (at a stop sign or in standing traffic)
after driving a while. Once it occurred at high speed climbing on
a freeway (but I managed to keep the engine from shutting down by
furiously jamming my foot on the accelerator). When it happens the
engine stops and it will not start until about 5 minutes have passed
and then it runs again fine for another month or two without a
problem. When the engine quits it always sounds as if the fuel is
getting cut off. The engine cranks but will not catch unless I wait about
5 minutes. My mechanic replaced the crank sender or sensor as his
best guess but it has not stopped the problem. Any ideas as to how to
fix the situation?

Hello Dennis,  Its been my experience to replace the fuel pump relay along with the 'crankshaft sensor'.As the systems age some parts get un-reliable,such as the 'fuel INJECTOR relay its know to fail. Its black, there are two of them in the engine compartment, same part #'s.the other is radio suppression relay.Mark one, then swap them and see if the condition goes away.Thank you and good hunting!  PKD

Thank you for your reply. I have now replaced the crankshaft sensor and the fuel pump relay. I have also replaced one of the black relays on the power steering strut in the engine compartment. Hopefully this will fix the problem as per your advice. I am confused though about the 2 black relays. I thought that one controlled the radiator fan and the other (the radio suppression relay) controlled the fuel injectors. Do I have it wrong?

Answer
Hello Dennis,  Depending on the system stidied, radio suppression/aux fan are interchangeable, the Injector relay is always 'stand alone'.The same relay is also used on the 240 in '92/'93 models as the Aux fan relay. Thanks agian and keep me informed.  PKD
