Question 1.
i am going to replace the intank fuel pump
is this done by taking tank off or is there a way to get at it inside car?

Question 2.

when i pull the vacuum hose off the fuel regulater the car idles better. but the regulater is new and the diaphram inside is not broken. Could this behavior be caused by the in tank fuel pump not operating

Answer
Hi John...
This is a tough topic...fuel delivery problems can be a huge pain.
Before you yank the intank pump...find your fuel pump relay....find color wire that supplies power to intank pump.Add jumper wire that gets voltage from power source.
Touch wire to tank pump with jumper...with a clear plastic gallon jug...put input line from tank into jug....in about 30 seconds that jug should be at least1/3 full...
Be sure to check ground wire to tank pump...
I have labored long and hard dealing with this type of problem...all I can say is...don't be so willing to put in new parts....you'll feel rather stupid if it still ran like sh#t after putting in pump.

Because gasoline is so bad...these days...I highly recommend using a big fan...to keep a good source of air in the tank area...or any other area involving gasoline exposure.

Good luck John,
