I have a 2001 V70XC, with almost all the available options.  I am having trouble with the drivers side electric mirror.  I bought the vehicle used and only one of the remote entry key fobs worked.  The dealership could not program a second key fob, so the UEM was replaced as well as both key fobs.  My probelm is that when the key fob opens the doors, the drivers mirror starts moving down to the bottom position (Problem existed before replacing UEM).  I have to use the manual adjustment buttons to get it back to the correct position.  If I use the the seat memory buttons, the same thing happens.  My question is, is the problem in the control module for the seat, or is the problem in the motor assembly for the mirror(position sensor)?  Can you think of any test I can do to narrow the problem down.  (Seat control module about $600.00 mirror motor $175.00 plus labor and software.)  I can do about any test since as I am an Electrical Engineer.  Wiring diagrams would be needed.
Thanks for your help.

That car can have up to 6 key fobs programmed.  The first 3 are able to return the seats and mirrors to the position programmed for the driver that holds that key fob.  If it moves the mirror to the wrong place you'll have to go back and reprogram it to the desired position for that preset.  I can't remember how off the top of my head but i know its in your owners manual.  Should be pretty easy to find.  You have nothing to worry about, your car is functioning properly.  Hope that helps.

Hello James,

Your suggestion was the first thing I tried.  I set all seat positions to the same settings.  You hold the memory button down, while pressing the seat position number.  I still have the same problem.  Some times the mirror moves just enough to have to be re-adjusted, but most of the time it moves down and you can hear the gears jumping at end of travel.  It still sounds to me like the position sensor is not being sent, or the controller is not processing it.  See original message.
Thanks for your help.

I don't think that the motors use a position sensor.  They are probably stepper motors.  I'll look into what it uses to determine position tomorrow.  It might use a position sensor though.  Either way if its not moving correctly it should post a code in the module for a non responding motor.  It sees that its giving the motor power and the position isn't changing so it knows something is wrong. Tha information would help to get a better idea of whats going on.  A wiring diagram wouldn't help because the interior functions are controlled by a Controller Area Network so all of the sensors go to the nearest module and send a signal across the network wiring to the module that requests the information.  The only way to read this communication to determine if its the sensor or the motor or the module you have to have the car hooked up to the volvo diagnostic computer.  That would be the best way to try to fix the problem, unfortunatly that isn't something you can do at home.  I wouldn't take it to the shop you had do the UEM.  New keys can be added, and old keys can be removed from the car without having to replace the UEM.  They aren't matched sets and the new keys come with the program codes to add the to ANY car.  They aren't a very honest shop and i would recommend going somewhere else.  If you have any other resources you want me to check for you I would be glad to help but i don't have much more advice to offer on the subject without having looked at it myself.

Hi James,

I hope you had a good vacation.  I will bring you up to date on what I have discovered.  First, the UEM was defective.  Both key FOB's are working fine.  Second, I received the wiring diagram, for my vehicle, from Volvo publications.  The control module for the driver mirror is in the door control button assembly.  It controls the windows, the door lock, and the mirrors.  The wiring diagram shows that the drivers mirror has three motors, two resistive position sensors, a light, and a heater.  Two of the motors are X and Y, and the sensors are X and Y.  I don't know what the third motor is for.  Any ideas? I plan to measure the wiper sections, for the sensors, at the control module to see if they are sending the correct data, without dropouts.  What I need from you is how to remove the control module, without damaging the plastic?  I don't know where the mounting tabs are located.  If you can help, I would appreciate it.
Thank you,

The mirrors with memory function are only held in to the mirror housing with clips.  So grab the glass firmly around the edge and it should pop out when you pull it.  The motor will come with the glass.  It pops out by pushing it one way against a spring and then pullong the other side up.  Kind of like putting a battery in a radio.  Push to the side and pull up.  Now the other thing in the diagram may not be a motor.  Volvo uses common pictures for different components.  They are all labeled with a number system though 3/121 would be a switch #121 whatever switch that may be. 2 is a relay, 3 switch, 4 module, 5 module - gauge cluster (only 5 there is), 6 motor, 7 sensor, 8 actuator, 9 I can't remember, 10 bulbs, and 11 and up are specialty circuits.  To get the module out of the door, you'll need to pull the door panel off.  There are clips all around the outer edge.  Puch the plunger in the middle in until it clicks.  Then the clip will pull out.   There is one Torx screw in the door handle.  After all of those are out lift the panel up then out.  Don't pull to far though.  Once you have it off you can disconnect all the wires from the back, and the door handle cable.  The module will go with the panel.  Once you look at it you'll see a few clips on each side of it.  Lift them up and the module will slide out.  Hope that helps.
