Volvo Repair: p/s pump on 1999 s80, power steering pump, kevin clark

I have a 1999 s80, with 104000 miles, the power steering pump is gushing from the small valve on the bottom of the pump. I have the part on order and was wondering if any other problem could have caused the pump to go bad? e.g. the steering rack? I dont want to install the new pump and have the same problem.

That problem will SHOULD be isolated to the power steering pump.  Most shops provide a warranty for the jobs they do and even if it comes back they will replace the pump again for free and fix what is causing the pump to fail for free.  The time is the only thing you have to lose, and if they're wrong you may get an expensive job(steering rack) done for the proce of a smaller job(pump).  Hope that helps.
