I have a 1988 760 turbo wagon which has been giving me a
long term headache with stalling.  The problem is
intermittent sometimes will run fine for weeks at a time,
other times will run to the store and will not start...
sometimes while driving.  It finally happened it front of my
mechanic.  We have already replaced the distributer, the
coil the fuel pump relay... checked the radio control and the
ignition amplifier.  Symptoms during failure... No power to
the fuel pumps... no spark to the plugs.  At the end of the
day he figured that it was the ecu but he did not have the
appropriate part to try it and by the following morning it
fixed itself.  Question:  is there anything else it could be
but the ECU (I have found it for about $240).  I am at my
wits end about this.  Can you advise?
Answer -
it is possible it is a ground signal from the ECU to the fuel pump relay.you would need to
check for this signal when the car does not start there are 2 signals one is a green/blue and
the other black/yellow I am guessing on these colors it has been awhile.if the mechanic is
good he will know by the schematic on the relay.

The problem is that it has fixed itself again so we can't test anything right now.
Would this ground signal explain why there is no spark going to the plugs?

Answer
no the missing ground would not stop spark.there may eb 2 problems.it is really going o need to be looked at when the problem happens.I have not seen any one thing cause fuel and spark to be missing.it would have to be some type of major power supply to the control units or possibly a problem at the battery cables especially the power cable and the grouping of wires attached to it. I would check the positive battery cable.
