Volvo Repair: alternator nitemare, shade tree mechanic, volvo 244

Question
1986 volvo 244 dl

The alternator is on the bottom.
The person who gave it to me said some "shade tree mechanic"  put in the wrong rebuilt alternator.  hence it didn't charge.
He purchased the "correct" one and when I looked at the mounting, there was a serious looking wire just dangling down there.

Question:  how many different wires are conected to the alternator?
Question: could it not be charging simply because the dumb  didn't connect the wire?
Question: do you have any illustrations on what's it supose to look like and how to remove and replace the one that's there now? I an old fart on a fixed income and the local garage wants to charge me 90 bucks which I can't spare.
any help would truly apperated.

sincerely;

Answer
There should be one major wire that is red which is bolted to the back.  That is the major charging wire, then there should be only one more seperate connector (either one or a few wires) that connects to it.  If both of those are plugged in and it still isn't charging, it has to be the alternator.  Hope that helps.
