Volvo Repair: engine light, v70 volvo, controller area network

Question
I have a 2000 V70 volvo wagon,app.45,000 miles, when the car was started this morning the engine service light and the ABS light came on. What is the procedure to obtain the codes causing these lights to go on? and how do I read the codes to make the repairs? any ideas as to what then cause could be?
Thank you

Answer
That car has a Controller Area Network (CAN) running the engine control system which can't be read very well by tgeneric scan tools.  You might be able to get standard OBD codes (P01XX for example) with it but you won't get the same description a volvo diagnostic machine could give you.  I know autozone has free code reading so that would be the first thing i would try.  If that doesn't get you anything a dealer can tell you the codes for the minmal diagnostic fee.  I know that autozones scanner almost certainly cannot erase the codes even if they can read them.  I don't know what they have though but you can try it once you get it fixed.  Hope that helps.
