Volvo Repair: Stalled and will not restart 1989 240 wagon, fuel pump relay, fuel pump relay switch

Question
I could not disconnect the air mass meter. I had I towed to a mechanic, they said the timing belt broke while I was driving it (why it stalled) and there's probably engine damage and that I'll need a rebuilt engine + labor ~$1600. Does this sound right?

I started the car fine, reversed to pull out, put it in drive and pressed the accelerator and my car stalled and will not restart. This was a week ago, it still will not start. Makes the right noise when I turn the ignition but engine will not turn over and start.
2 days before this happening I went on a several hundred mile trip home for the holidays- just in case this might have something to do with it.

I checked all the fuses by the driver's side foot area, all are fine cause they are pretty new. But I put a new fuse in for the fuel pump, with no change.

I've read through this message board... and I'm trying to eliminate what it could be, especially looking for something I could fix myself (I know very little about working on cars, I change bulbs, fuses, wiper fluid, check oil). So please instruct me on how to go about doing the repair(s) you think may work. I'm a student and short on cash.

Could it be the fuel pump relay switch, constant speed idle motor, fuel pump fuse underhood, resoldering fuel pump relay, spark plugs, spark plug wires, air mass meter, cleaning the throttle housing, faulty crank sensor, a loose contact, other type of fuse, in-tank pump?

Thanks so much for your time and expertise!

Answer -
I would start with checking for codes in the ignition and fuel control units below is how to do so.if there are no codes I would replace the fuel pump relay and engine speed sensor.

in the engine bay on the drivers side near the strut tower there is a small black box with a wire attached to it.place the wire in the terminal marked 2.turn ignition key on (not started)press the small button for 1 second and the code will be displayed as a series of flashes.a red led displays the codes.the code will be three digits.small pause in between flashes for a single number long pause between flashes for the next number.example 121 will be flash.....flash..flash.....flash.repeat three times or until first code repeats itself.to erase the code after all codes have been checked hold the button for a good 5 seconds then release the light should light steady, then press for another 5seconds.this will erase the codes.  email me the codes and i will tell you what they are..socket 2is the fuel system 6 is ignition.

the 121 refers to the airmass meter.it could be bad or this code could have been set for another reason.I wouldtry disconnecting the airmass meter and see if it starts.if it does then recoonect while it is running if it stalls it is bad.

Answer
TAKE THE CAR ELSEWHERE!!!THERE WOULD BE NO DAMAGE FROM A BROKEN TIMING BELT ON THIS CAR.IT WILL NOT BEND VALVES IF THE BELT BREAKS WHICH IS WHAT THEY ARE THINKING.i WOULD HAVE IT WORKED ON BY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS VOLVOS OR TELL THEM TO JUST PUT THE BELT ON.IF IT IS ONLY THE BELT THEN THAT IS ALL IT SHOULD NEED AND SHOULD RUN IF THEY SAY OTHERWISE I WOULD GET A SECOND OPINION.
