Volvo Repair: 1991 Volvo V70xc Power Windows, 2001 volvo v70, volvo v70

Question
Thanks James - It is a 2001 Volvo V70 - wrong century!.
It appears to get power as it will move one-quarter inch at a time.  It chatters in a specific pattern with each quarter inch move.  Both controls result in the same effect. Does this provide any further enlightenment?

The right front window and mirror do not operate correctly.  When the switch is engaged it chatters down very slowly and the mirror seems to respond not at all.   Any suggestions?  and how easy to fix myself?  (the car I mean).

First off, V70's weren't introduced until 1998, so is the year or the model incorrect you've given me?  I don't know which wiring diagrams to reference until i have a valid year/model.  In general concerning this problem, if both faults occurred at the same time you should check common causes like blown fuses, common grounds, etc.  It shouldn't be hard to find as long as you know how to use a voltmeter.  You can check to make sure that the motors are getting power from the switch when you press it, if it does, check for proper grounds for the motor.  If both those check good the motor is bad (window or mirror).  If its a 2001 or up v70 you really need to take it to the dealer because all interior functions are controlled by computers (may need a software reload).  The only other thing i haven't mentioned that could be the problem is if the window/mirror is actually stuck in its position, the only way to check for that is to disassemble the door panel and watch the window on its tracks for binding components.  If it chatters this is a good possibility.    If all these check out good and its still not working properly it may be necessary for a trained professional get their hands on it.  If you have any other questions regarding this problem after you look at it, don't hesitate to ask.

Answer
Well unless the motor sounds sick like its getting worn out or sticking, the Passenger Door Module probably needs a software reload.  Occasionally one of the computer modules will lose part of its software when the battery gets low or if there is a voltage spike from a sticking motor.  All software has to be downloaded via satellite to a Volvo Diagnostic computer throught the dealer.  It shouldn't be too expensive but every dealer is different with its labor rate.  Worst case scenario is it actually needs a new module but since its attempting to move the window it sounds like its intact.  One thing you should try before you take it to the dealer is reset the cars network through the door.  With all the doors closed put the key in the outside lock and lock, unlock, and then lock the door again in quick succession.  You'll either see the headlights flash, or inside lights come on (dependent on programmed setting).  Hopefully that'll work.  Good Luck.
