Volvo Repair: 850 T5-R engine failure and rebuild, hydraulic tensioners, puff puff

Question
Dear Sir,

About a week ago I heard a ticking noise comming from the top end of the motor and figured it was a lifter that was stuck.  I opened the oil cap to see if there was proper oiling going on and there was.  On my way to the shop the engine failed.  When we took a quick look at it the timing belt was in good condition, the engine initially turned then became stuck after a few cranks.  After that I noticed that the camshafts were about ninety degrees off but the belt was in great shape.  I thought that was odd.  Any thoughts?

I am planning to remove the head to see if the motor is repairable.  Do you first off have any experience with a failure such as this.  If so what was the problem.  Additionally, when the motor was still running and i checked the dipstick there was a little positive pressure comming out of the oil check tube.  Kind of a puff puff of air, no oil made it up the tube.  PCV valve?  Please give any info you might have

Thank you ,
Bob Burnett

Answer
if the cams have jumped timing the most common problem is a the belt has broken or teeth have been torn of of it.could be that the tensioner pulley for the timing belt or idler pulley has come apart and the belt went slack and then jumped timing.I have not seen many or the hydraulic tensioners go bad but it may have become weak and let the belt slip.I have not seen many on this model go bad for any kind of oiling problem.
