Volvo Repair: volvo 93 850 GLT AC question, volvo technicians, ac compressor

several times in the last 6 months, the AC and REC lights flashed when I started the car - from time to time it wouldn't blow as cold so had it checked - they found air in the lines so recharged freon -- also put a dye in but couldn't find a leak -- hadn't had more trouble until yesterday -- when i started the car, there was a roar - sounds like a fan not operating correctly - sounds like it is coming from front passenger side -- the roar gets louder as the fan speed is increased and stops completely when the fan is turned off.  doesn't blow much, but what it does blow is cold -- there are no reliable volvo technicians w/in 100 miles - can you direct me so I know what to say when i take it into local shop?

Try turning on only the fan without the air conditioning on and see if the noise is there. If so, the fan motor is bad. If there is no noise, now try it with the ac on, if there's noise then the ac compressor is bad. But the way you're describing it, most likely the fan motor.
