Volvo Repair: 740 SE 1991, mechanic check, volvo 740

Question
Hi Regis,
I was hoping you could help me solve a problem I have with my 1991 Volvo 740.  It is regarding the security feature which prevents the car from starting unless you press the passenger side window.  The wires are wearing on the passenger window - so in order to start the car I need to sit in it for 10 to 15 minutes just pressing the passenger window button continuously until it starts.  Is there any way I, myself, can disable the security feature?  Like a chip or a fuse I can just remove?  Any insight you can give me would be greatly appreciated!!!  And thank you again for all the help you've given in the past!!!  It is more appreciated than you know!

Josh

First, this forum is excellent and I thank you for using your freetime to provide everyone with so much useful knowledge on Volvos.  My question, I just purchased a 1991 Volvo 740 SE with 183,000 at an auction.  It looks mint, inside and out, and the seller's mechanic says the engine and tranny are in great condition (may or may not be true).  Because I'm going into this blind, what should I have my mechanic check on the car (if I just tell him to check over it he probably wont be that thorough).  Are there any cosistent problems or issues you've seen with 1991 740 SEs?  Its an automatic.  Also should I stay away from Synthetic oil for the engine and tranny or should I use them? Thank you!

to use synthetic or not to use synthetic that is the question.I feel they lubricate better and protect to a higher heat in case the engine or trans is overheating.but they get dirty like all the rest.if you use regular oil and change it at the scheduled time it will be just fine.I would do oil at 3k miles and the trans at every 20k miles.

as for problems they really had no common problems.I would just check the regular items such as brakes, belts, hoses, bushings.it would be best to have a volvo mecahnic check it over he will know what items wear most.even if it cost an hours labor and even if that means having the dealer check it.

you are welcome.I am glad to see that someone understands this is done in my freetime.some people act like I get large amounts of money to do this.have a great weekend

Answer
ther eis no such device from the factory.if there is a security device like this it is aftermarket and I really have never seen this before.I would have to see it to see how they wired it up.I would have a good volvo mechanic looka at it so maybe they can unhook what someone may have done.sorry I copuld not help more.Have A Merry Christmas.
