Volvo Repair: Transmission, coat hanger, volvo 740

Question
I own a 1992 Volvo 740 station wagon. It has an overdrive tranmission built in Japan. It will not go in to overdrive. I have replaced the relay below the radio in the dash, and the solenoid mounted to the transmission. I have checked the signal wire to the solenoid and it does function as well as the in/out light on the dash panel. This is a well made car. What am I overlooking?

Answer
I would have some one operate the switch while feeling the solenoid you should feel it click.if it does click then I would remove the solenoid and be sure the hole on the transmission that the fluid goes through is not clogged.use a piece or wire or coat hanger to poke into the hole to be sure it is clear.if all is clear in the solenoid and transmission hole it may be a problem inside  the transmission.
