I am having to turn the switch off and on several times before it will crank.  When you initially turn the switch it sounds as if it is not getting gas. THe computer diagnostic test stated that a coolant temp sensor was bad.  That won't cause it to not to start, will it?  Can you tell me where to begin to look?
Answer -
if it is flooding the engine it will cause it not to start.replace the engine coolant temperature sensor.


I have found that by unplugging the sensor the car will crank.  Can I drive the car with the sensor being unplugged, until we can figure out what the problem is? The car is not overheating.  Also, thanks for your help you have been a tremendous asset in dealing with this problem.


I have replace the temp sensor and termostat twice.  The check engine light still comes on with a code saying the temp sensor is bad.  The fan continues to run after the car is shut off and it will not start when it is cooled off.  What do I look for now?  The wehicle is an authorized Volvo service center but they are confused also.  You were right on it with the sensor flooding the motor.

there could be a wiring problem or poor connection at the control unit connection.I have seen some corroded connectors at the control unit. also you would want to check the tension of each female connection of the control unit with a male terminal pin in hand to see that there is good drag when pulling the pin back out of the female connector.for this you need the proper male terminal.I have also seen bad control units cause this also.

I suppose you could but the temp. guage will not work and the fuel system with substitite a value for the sensor.


I did not understand waht you were saying about the fuel system. Also we checked all of the connections and found no corrosion and we got good connections from all the male and female ends.  We pulled the computer to look for problems but found none.  Any other suggestions that you can think of will be greatly appreciated.  I am thinking of going ahead and driving the car with the sensor unplugged.

the fuel system uses the sensor information and other information to base the amount of fuel to inject into the engine.without this signal the fuel control unit will use a default value.which may cause the amout of fuel injected to not be the proper amout what this will do in long term use I can not be sure.you would need to check the sensor resistance with an ohm meter and check the wiring from sesnor to control unit with a ohm meter.if all is ok then the possibility is the control unit is bad.
