Volvo Repair: Broken Timing Belt, cylinder head gaskets, volvo 850 glt

Question
The timing belt of my 1993 Volvo 850 GLT broke in service. Is the engine a non interference type? If it is can I have it repaired with minimal cost? If it's not is it worth to fix it? This car looks and drives like new even with 232,000 miles in it.

Please advise,

Answer
Hello,
It is very hard to evaluate the engine's condition now without removing it. Because, there may have problem about engine valves, cylinder head, may be pistons, connecting rods... It should have been removed completely and serarched very detailed. If the problem is very big, to replace the engine with new one is more logical, but if the engine can be saved with replacing of valves or cylinder head gaskets and surely with belts and gears of them, it will be logical to repair the engine. Evaluate this case with helping of this mentality.
