Volvo Repair: 1992 Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon, volvo 740 turbo wagon, shocks and struts

Question
Regis,

Hoping you could provide me some insight. I just purchased a really well conditioned 92 740 Turbo Wagon for my wife to drive locally. It has a strong engine, transmission and drive train. The seller agreed to repair the A/C and replace the catalytic converter prior to my purchase...overall a good deal at $3,500.

However, the car still needs some work on the front and read suspension. It needs new shocks in both the front and the rear + new bushings for the control arms in the front. My local Volvo mechanic diagnosed these problems for me.

Also, the rear right wheel seems to make a clunky metallic noice that the mechanic indicated was a loose hubcab plate.

Anyway, I have two questions:

1) In terms of the suspension work, how important is it to use volvo specific (or certified) parts in the repair. I'm not looking for a high performance vehicle - just a safe and reliable care for my wife to drive locally? I'd like to save some money on it since it a 2nd car

2) In terms of the hubcap plate jiggling and clanking...making a metallic rattling noise - have you ever heard of this before? Any suggestions on how to fix it myself?

Your thoughts and advice are appreciated..

Sincerely

Phil Hayes

Answer
good quality aftermarket shocks and struts should be ok.

on some of them they can make this noise.this car should have aluminum wheels with plastic center caps.unless there is some other option wheel on it.I own a 92 740 turbo wagon blue 215k miles.it may need to be bent if it is a metal center cap to make it fit the wheel tighter or if plastic it may need replace if the plastic is distorted or broken.

overall the 740 is a good car.
