Volvo Repair: 30,000 mile tune up: Do I have to go to auth dealer?, financial stressors, car repair shop

Question
My 2002 Volvo s40 is due for its 30,000 scheduled maintenance. There are no mechanical problems with the car at this time. I have only gone to Volvo dealerships in the past to get the tune ups done as scheduled, and I am always shocked at the high cost.  I inquired with the local Volvo dealership here in Chicogo area and they tell me it will be a minimum of $650 for the 30,000 mile scheduled maintenance, additional costs for whatever else they might find notwithstanding.

Do I have to go to a dealership to get my 30,000 tune up done?  Is it mandatory to use Volvo parts? Can I go to a reputable car repair shop for the repairs instead of the dealership? What does this do to the warranty?  Due to unexpected financial stressors, I need to get this done at the least expense, but I also do not want to cause mechanical problems down the road. Please tell me what my options may be.

Thanks.

Monica

Answer
no you do not have to go to the dealer.it is not manatory ,but I would use them.yes you could go to a reputable repair shop.it should do nothing to the warranty.at the dealer you have more recourse if something goes wrong.they also gurantee work and parts for one year.the cost is higher but the waranty will most likely be better and if something goes wrong with a part the dealer installs youi can have that part replaced under waranty at any dealer.
the choice is yours you just need to weigh the options
