Volvo Repair: Oil leak, blown head gasket, crankcase pressure

Question
Hi Chris,

I recently purchased a 1992 Volvo 240. After driving it for a couple of weeks, I began to notice that it is leaking oil. Apparently, oil is leaking from the oil cap and running down the block. I replaced the oil cap seal in an act of wishful thinking, but it made no difference. I discovered what appears to be engine coolant in the oil that has leaked from my vehicle.  The vehicle starts and runs well with no overheating issues, however it does smoke a little and makes some rattling noises. Do you think I have a blown head gasket?

Thanks for your help,
Rich

Answer
if the oil itself is not like a milk shake, and you just noticed some whiteness under the oil cap. its a condensation problem. which can be usually taken care of by performing a pcv service. replace the flame trap, (dealer part) and be sure the vacuum line going to the intake manifold isnt clogged up. this should solve excess crankcase pressure (oil leaking from oil cap seal) as well as condensation under the oil fill cap
