Volvo Repair: Winter Switch not working and GSM damage, volvo dealer, spilled coffee

I have a 2001 XC Wagon and the winter switch gets stuck in both the on and off position.  I took it to the Volvo dealer and they said it was due to spilled coffee and soda.  They also said it damaged the GSM which is not under warranty and it will cost $300 to fix.

Does this sound right to you?

unfortunately yes. Volvo does not cover items that have been damaged via an outside influence. as for needing the GSM I would hope that they could simply clean the hole for you, and reduce the cost a bit. at least we would at our dealership. present it to them like this have them spray it with brake cleaner lightly and operate it while moving the winter button. if it frees up, you might get away with a minimal charge. if their cleaner damages the gsm, and the winter switch, your in the same boat right?
